WE COULD HEAR THE NOISE emanating from the Freestone cottage as we headed down the path. The air was vibrating with the sound of their gruff voices and joyful laughter. Matt answered the door with a weary but happy expression. I could see how thrilled he was to have his entire family together for the holiday.

A booming voice greeted me from across the room with my childhood nickname, “Ellie Bean, come here and give me a hug.” Graham Freestone came barrelling across the room and lifted me off my feet in a bear hug. Since he’d joined the police department, he had put on a serious amount of muscle, and his buzz cut showed off his handsome features.

A small, attractive woman came walking up behind him, smiling. “Hi, Ellie. I’m Hannah, Graham’s fiancée. He’s told me so much about you.”

I shot her a wink. “It’s probably all lies; don’t believe a word of it. He’s known for his tall tales. I have no idea how he got into the police department.”

She giggled, and I liked her immediately. She had a warmth about her, and her eyes sparkled. With soft brown hair and a petite figure, I could see how Graham would be attracted to her.

Across the room, it looked like Bobby was chasing one of his nine-month-old twins, who was crawling like a commando with alarming speed. His wife, Rachael, came bustling in from the small kitchen with the other twin in her arms. I had met Rachael before, and her no-nonsense humour kept both the babies and Bobby in check. She was probably only the same age as me, but I couldn’t imagine wrangling twins with the ease that she did.

Leo melded effortlessly into the chaos, and it surprised me at how thrilled everyone was to see him. The boys were joking with him like he was an old friend, and Matt looked especially pleased to see him. I always thought it was just a working relationship, but seeing the two of them together chatting happily, it looked like it was something more. I remembered Leo’s concern for Matt at the hospital the day my mom died.

We didn’t stay too long, but they agreed they would come to the manor later that afternoon to help with the preparation for dinner.

As we were heading along the pathway, Leo looked down at my boots. “Would you like to go for a walk? Are you okay in those boots?”

I nodded. Although I had hiking boots back at the house, the boots I was wearing would work just fine. It was such a beautiful day that the thought of a walk around the lake filled me with joy. The edge of the lake had just started to ice over, and if we had a cold season, it would probably ice over completely, but as kids we were brainwashed about never walking on the ice unless an adult had tested it.

We strolled on one of the many pathways chatting, and I enjoyed the glimpses of the lake from different viewpoints.
